Members of the Norwegian RefugeesWellSchool team at the National Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies (NKVTS) have introduced RWS and its interventions in a number of seminars, webinars and conferences targeting national, municipal and county level education authorities, alongside primary and secondary school educators and administrators.

This included events organized by The National Centre of Multicultural Education, and meetings and consultations facilitated by national government/public bodies, such as the webinar ”Psychosocial support to children, adolescents and families who have fled from Ukraine”, organized jointly by five national directorates on 24 May (the Directorate of Children, Youth and Family Affairs; Dir. of Education; Dir. of Health; Dir. of National Police; Dir. of Immigration).

Results from the RefugeesWellSchool project have informed research and evidence briefs, submitted and published by NKVTS in its role as governmental advisor on terrorism and disaster preparedness. And, as a last example, project results are featured also in text and video information packages developed for an NKVTS special website section on psychosocial support for refugees from the war in Ukraine, reaching large numbers of stakeholders in refugee reception around the country, including professionals and policymakers in the health, education and migration/integration sectors. Further domestic dissemination activities occasioned by the Ukraine crisis are scheduled to continue in the months ahead.

The RefugeesWellSchool consortium has informed and supported several schools, policy-makers and governments regarding the implementation of psychosocial interventions for young refugees in schools. On a European level, RWS interventions have been included in the School Education Gateway and the European Toolkit for Schools and RWS members have been involved in several trainings and dissemination events, such as a training on psychosocial wellbeing of refugee children organised by the Teacher Academy and a presentation during the Peer Learning Activity organised by DG EAC in May 2022. On national levels, our RWS partners were involved in many different initiatives. Such care ordinarily takes place in the classroom, raising questions about the impact of the 2020 COVID-19 school closures on teachers’ care work. In this article, RWS researchers draw on qualitative interviews with teachers in Danish preparatory classes to examine the challenges they faced staying in contact with, and supporting, migrant and refugee learners during the school closure in the spring of 2020*.

Given that schools are promising spaces for supporting newcomer refugee and migrant learners psychosocially, the Danish RWS team was curious to understand what role young newcomers themselves play in relation to each other’s well-being. Drawing on an ethnographic approach, this article shows how refugee and immigrant adolescents in two preparatory classes in Denmark develop their own practices of care for self and others. The analysis reveals how newcomers form significant everyday caring practices conducive to well-being, and highlights the temporally and spatially bounded nature of their care. The authors also propose a novel conceptual lens for school-based support for newcomer learners *. Do you want to know more?

In this article, researchers from the Danish RWS team examines qualitatively how teachers of preparatory classes in Danish public schools approach and respond to the care needs of newcomer migrant and refugee learners. We show how teachers care for newcomers and how their care responses are both determined bythe external support available and teachers’ individual dispositions to go beyond their teaching duty. Although many teachers provided social and emotional care for newcomer learners, some teachers felt ill-equipped to address the complex psychosocial needs of newcomers. In the absence of external support, this translatedinto feelings of stress and guilt*. Do you want to know more?
On September 16th 2022, Anne Sofie Børsch has successfully defended her PhD, entitled ”Care in classrooms for newcomers: a comparative ethnographic case study of social practices to support learners’ well-being in two classrooms for newly arrived refugee and immigrant adolescents in Denmark”.

Anne Sofie’s PhD thesis examines the role of schools in supporting the psychosocial well-being of newcomer refugee and immigrant adolescents in Denmark, including how newcomer adolescents and teachers in two different school settings engaged with the same psychosocial intervention. Schools are increasingly cited as promising spaces for supporting the well-being of refugee and immigrant learners, but little is known about how such efforts are shaped by particular school contexts.

Anne Sofie has been part of the RefugeesWellSchool-team, as also both her promotors, Prof. dr. Morten Skovdal and Prof. dr. Signe Smith Jervelund, University of Copenhagen.
