There are refugee youths all over Europe. They flee with their families or alone. More than half of the refugees are children. They have often witnessed or experienced violence. In the country of origin, during the flight and in the country of arrival. As a result, they run a greater risk of psychological problems, such as symptoms of depression or behavioural problems.
Fortunately, young people have a strong natural resilience. However, they do need help. The support and trust of an adult is very important. Augeo Foundation’s online course ‘Supporting refugee youths’ shows how the natural resilience of these young people can be strengthened.
Augeo’s online course ‘Supporting refugee youth’ is implemented within the intervention of the InService Teacher Training (INSETT), one of the interventions being implemented in the context of the EU-funded RefugeesWellSchool project (2018-2022). In the past two weeks, a group of about 200 Finnish teachers have started. They give lessons to refugee youths in transition classes or regular classes in secondary schools. We are proud the course is now being used to support teachers. At the end of September and in October 2019, the Swedish and Norwegian Augeo online courses were offered to teachers who teach refugee youths. In December 2019 the Swedish Augeo online courses were successfully completed by the teachers who teach refugee youths. In spring 2020 this course was started by the control schools. We are proud the course is now being used to support teachers.
The InService Teacher Training aims to improve the expertise and competence of teachers in supporting the mental health and psychosocial well-being of students and to promote psychosocial and educational transitions after resettlement in a new country. In short, the aim of the INSETT intervention is to make teachers and schools ‘refugee competent’ (Pastoor, 2015).
The INSETT training consists of three – interrelated – course modules: two classroom learning modules and the online course ‘Supporting refugee youths’ from Augeo, which is completed individually.
