On 21 March 2022, RefugeesWellSchool hosted an all-day conference and workshop to discuss the RWS study findings and provide practical information on the various psycho-social interventions carried out. Hosted online and open to the public, the event drew dozens of researchers, teachers, practitioners, and policy makers, all joining from a number of different countries.
Keynote speaker Dr. Mina Fazel discussed the importance of the school setting in promoting well-being and fostering belonging of refugee and migrant adolescents, and noted how the RWS project furthers the evidence base for school-based psycho-social interventions for this population. RWS consortium members presented on key facets of the projects’ findings, including the interplay of resilience and mental health, and provided insights into the conclusions of the study’s effectiveness report.
Participants were also given an overview and demonstration of available RWS resources, including an early look at a tool to assist educators and practitioners in selecting the intervention most appropriate for their particular setting and resources. Currently being finalised, this tool will be available on the RWS web site in the next few weeks.
During the workshop portion of the event, participants selected one of the five RWS interventions and attended a group workshop on this specific intervention. Led by the RWS consortium members who piloted each of these interventions as part of the study, these workshops provided participants with the opportunity to ask questions about the implementation of the intervention, including feasibility and possible adaptations required for specific contexts.
The RWS Consortium was thrilled to gather together such a diverse group of participants and to share the project’s findings, and hopes that this event will further the uptake of school-based psycho-social interventions for refugee and migrant youth.
